‘Koan’ is a term used in Zen Philosophy and often functions as a teaching tool or a mental puzzle used to transcend the student's mental understanding and enable them to reach a direct transcendental understanding. The student is expected to reflect and meditate on the koan, with the end goal being a mental ‘enlightenment’ or direct experience of understanding.
